Information on Fossil Park Hours of OperationThe park is open SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS ONLY through October 21, Saturdays 10-5 and Sundays 11-5. Buried Treasure! The one fossil everyone wants to unearth at Fossil Park is the Trilobite, the distinctive life form of the era. Fossil Park is, however, rich in brachiopods, coral, and over 200 species of prehistoric life. These fossils tend to be large and whole. Visitors will have rare exposure to fossil hunting in an actual rock quarry with an abundant fossil content. It's up to you to dig up these buried treasures and the best part is that you get to keep what you find! Safety First & AlwaysFossil Park allows amateur and professional Rock Hounds to hunt for fossils in a safe environment. The Devonian shale is transported to the park so you do not have to dig into solid rock. Therefore, hammers, picks, chisels, and similar items are prohibited. All you need is a brush and water to unearth and clean your fossils. Bring an egg carton or milk jug with the top removed to carry your collection. Fossil Park AmenitiesFossil Park features three fossil dig sites, an ADA handicap-accessible concrete ramp to the bottom of the quarry including an ADA accessible dig site, concrete walkways, a six-foot safety fence around the quarry's rim, and a 60-car paved parking lot. And The Winner Is...The Ohio Park & Recreations Association named Fossil Park as one of its top two parks in Ohio in 2001 and one of the State's best six projects in that year. Hanson Aggregates Midwest received one of the two statewide Reclamation Awards from the Ohio Aggregates & Industrial Minerals Association for its community reuse project with Fossil Park. Hanson has nominated Fossil Park for the national Reclamation Award. AdmissionFossil Park admission is free. Food & RestroomsFossil Park will have port-a-potty service in 2007 while the permanent restroom is under construction. While there are no fulltime food services at Fossil Park, directly across the street is the new Mayberry Development, complete with a pizzeria, ice cream shop, subway shop, and sports tavern that offer food and beverage service to Fossil Park patrons. Pets Pets are not permitted in Fossil Park. They are permitted on the Quarry Ridge Bike Trail that runs through the Fossil Park parking lot only. |
